Has Anyone Seen Zero Dark Thirty? Is It Worth the Torture of Moviegoing?

As some of you know, I don't own a television and I very much dislike attending the cinema. I venture forth once per year, for that Sole Irresistable Flick. I'm debating whether to see Zero Dark Thirty. It sounds promising, but it's early days for 2013, and I don't want to toss away my single foray so early in the season. Advice, Dear Ones?

I knew it. All you Navy people are all thumbs.

Not just Navy guys (I resemble that remark). I have a chef friend who actually has three thumbs. His best dishes always get...drum roll please...three thumbs up.

Is that a cooking joke? Because if it is, you can share your recipes here. It's safe. You are among friends!

MG, you are a tad spunky today, I've noticed. Been nipping the Hooah Juice?

No television? How do you survive, woman!

A co-worker saw it over the weekend. He loved it.

Skk you don't own a television and you don't go to the cinema?

It sounds like you should have lived in the 1930's. Either that or your are trying to use some fancy writer words with us trying to confuse us.

No writer-tricking at all! I really do not own a television. I can't stand watching one or having one on. It irks the bejeebers out of me when I go to a restaurant, and a t.v. is playing. I barely can sit through a movie without wanting to leave. I like to read, though. And write!

I covered my eyes for the first twenty minutes, then was captivated from then on. Great acting! Felt very authentic...

It was very good...more like a docudrama than a typical movie...Chastain is incredible.

I would echo: very much like a docu-drama.

That said, I happen to have liked Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" much better. The characters were more developed, you could empathize with them, understand them, question them, damn them, and then understand them all over again.

Don't get me wrong; this was a tough bit of subject matter and a daring exercise in film-making which, essentially, says that sometimes -- you know what? -- apparently torture does work.

My absolute favorite part?

There was nothing from Obama's perspective. AT ALL. He was a talking head for a few moments at the beginning, and that's it.

I refuse to see it. If the government (read Obama) had a hand in it, I want nothing to do with it. I feel like the SEALs are once again being exploited so some Hollywood actors can make a lot of money. Maybe I'll see it when it comes out on Netflix...maybe...

"Zero Dark Thirty" is fiction and nothing more. This does not mean, you wouldn't enjoy it. We will never truly know what happened during that event. It all depends on the agenda you are bringing to this movie. If you have no expectations, you can't be disappointed.

This is just my thought about fiction and non-fiction, many times there is more actual truth in fiction, than in non-fiction. In something like this, any facts will come out in deep layers of nuance. You will need to do some real serious work to get to those bits of information. The choice in your strategy is totally up to you. Good Luck!

Why, thank you, Grumpy! I did in fact see the movie last week. It was good, and I'm glad I saw it, but I wanted more follow-through on some of the characters, and it raised a lot of questions that I would like answers to.

It appears from your comment, that the movie met its goal. Sometimes, the goal is not to answer your questions, but instead, raise even more questions outside *our* range of thinking. In my view, this takes a great of courage to walk your path, congratulations.

Thank you.
