Injured Soldiers Languishing in Transit Because Army Had No Funds, Now Can't Find Flights

I received a troubling note from my dear friend Dbie, otherwise known as Da Squinty. Take it away, Squinty...

No money, no flights for injured Soldiers?

Over a year ago, two companies from the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the New York National Guard left for Afghanistan. Today, I would LOVE to welcome them all home to Ft. Drum - but can’t, because of typical Army inefficiency.

Most of the Soldiers are home (they hit U.S. soil again on December 31 - Happy New Year!) but seven injured Soldiers are still stuck at Camp Shelby, Mississippi for the most ridiculous reason you’ve ever heard:  NO MONEY.
Yep.  NO MONEY.

Out of the two companies, about 40 Soldiers were found to have injuries requiring further treatment.  None were able to leave Camp Shelby because the US Army “didn’t have any money” to buy their airline tickets.

Their families were also denied the opportunity to pay for the flights themselves, so the men sat.  And sat.  And sat… until today.  Money was miraculously found to send them all home today… EXCEPT the ones going to Ft. Drum.

Now they’re stuck because the US Army “can’t find flights” to Watertown, New York until at least Tuesday.

Funny.  I was able to find flights every day for the next week, starting Saturday morning… so why can’t the Army?  I was also able to find flights (plenty of them, not just one a day like the Watertown flights) to Syracuse, NY, which is only about 40 minutes from Ft. Drum.  Depending upon who you talk to, they can’t fly to Syracuse either because the Ft. Drum WTU won’t allow it or because the Camp Shelby Transitions Office won’t let them.

I may be Da Squinty, but it didn’t take mad skills to find flights to get these men home before next Tuesday… so why can’t the U.S. Army?

Thank you, Susan.
This is happening all over the country from what I have been told, but I only have personal knowledge of the happenings at Camp Shelby.

We have contacted several members of Congress with NO response. Not even so much as a "huh. Imagine that."

How can we have money for a multi-million dollar inauguration, but NO MONEY to get our Soldiers home from war??!!??

I am asking the same question, Dbie!

There must a special place waiting for our National leaders who allow this to happen!!!

Who was it that said, "America is not at war. The American military is at war. America is at the mall."

In other words, to most of these folks' constituents, the war is old news. Now if one of these soldiers wants an abortion, personal assault rifle, or claims he can't get a flight home because he's Muslim...well NOW we're talking!

Classic military giving these guys the run around and classic government not caring. :(

The US army can't find ways and means of transporting their OWN troops?

What kind of brain glazing INCOMPETENCE is THIS??

WTF??

I am sure Sasha and Malia enjoyed Hawaii, though.

I don't get this at all. Thank you, Dbie, for giving us all the heads-up. What an outrage! And, yes... that Hawaiian holiday must not be interrupted.

Still no progress today.

It's too bad we don't have our own fleet of military aircraft that can be configured for troop transport.

Oh. Wait.

It is an old story. They care about getting you there but not getting back home, especially if you are wounded. Probably the State will have to cough up the travel money as these guys are funded from the State budgets.
